Tensegrity is the most important concept for understanding musculoskeletal structure and dysfunction causing pain. My goal as an osteopathic physician is to incorporate these ideas about structure and function of the body to use manipulation, injection techniques, exercise etc to aid the body's natural healing process.
This is an example of a Tensegrity structure in Kansas City. Notice that the struts are suspended between the wires, but they are NOT TOUCHING. The tension balanced between the elements provides integrity to the structure. The Tensegrity concept is applicable to understanding structure in the human body. The human body uses muscles, ligaments, tendons, and fascia to suspend the bones.
